Tharsus’ insight on growth added to regional business resource hub

Tharsus’ Chief Technical Officer Dave Swan discusses our journey to date and shares advice that can help other businesses as part of the site’s ‘insights’ section; a collection of case studies, fact sheets and interviews offering hints, tips and inspiration to help organisations grow.

The North East LEP’s long term vision is of a stronger North East economy. Their Strategic Economic Plan (SEP), established in 2014, set out how the LEP would work with partners to achieve this.

One key area of focus is increasing the amount of high growth businesses in the region by supporting relevant companies through this often tricky stage of development. The online North East Growth Hub is one significant facet of the plan to improve the numbers of these local scaleup firms and assist them on their journey.

Dave Swan shares the Tharsus story from the very beginning, from our origins as a sheet metal fabricator to our post-financial crisis repositioning as a sub-contractor that designs and manufactures machinery. He also describes our growing focus on the fast-developing robotics industry and speaks honestly about the challenges we have faced and overcome over the years.

Dave reflects on the support we have accessed and the connections we’ve made, describing ourselves as being comfortable with reaching out for help and explaining that we’d rather learn from others than make their mistakes over again. He talks openly about what we wish we’d known earlier as well.

Dave’s main advice to those looking to start their own business is;

“Be proud of who you are but be confident there are other people out there who can help you, and don’t be afraid to ask. There’s never a wasted conversation. Even if it doesn’t lead you to somewhere that time, I’m a big believer in serendipity, so just expose yourself to things that other people are doing and keep trying to improve.”

Tharsus has also supported ‘Be the Business’ with our Chief Operations Officer (COO) John Lucas describing his three Ps of successful delivery. You can find out more about this here:
